What is new in Gnome 48 (Updated)
A new well being screen in settings, calendar tweaks, and more
Gnome has gotten more and more stable and usable with every version, especially on Wayland. With some of the recent versions of Gnome; it even has some features that are exclusive to Wayland. Now with the latest changes coming to Gnome 48, it expands that support for Wayland and adds some much needed edge case features that have been missing.
Core component changes
Mutter
- Improved colour management support
- Landed support for toggling HDR in the settings
- Introduced a new CLI tool for managing the display (gdctl)
- Improved input/output latency for cursor movements
- Improved frame rate on monitor attached to secondary GPUs
- And many more bug fixes
- Tripple buffering has been merged (Updated)
Shell
- Support added for screen time/health breaks, and screen time limits
- Better appearance of the on-screen keyboard
- Some tweaks to the quick settings toggles
- Grouped notifications (Updated)
Settings
- Apps screen will further support for web apps installed using Epiphany
- Display screen will have some updated UI for scale and multiple displays
- Power screen adds support batter charge limits
- Power screen will also be split into two pages, General and Power Saving
- Power screen removes dialog for automatic suspend
- Adds a new "Wellbeing" screen that show screen time (this is disables by default)

App updates
Gnome web (Epiphany)
- Improvements to the history dialog
- Simplified UI for importing bookmarks and passwords
- Show toast notifications when a download is complete
- Redesigned privacy report dialog
- New design for the bookmarks dialog
- Other fixes and improvements
Document Viewer (Evince)
- Better support for Adobe PDF open parameters
- A lot of removed deprecated code
- Updated libraries
- A bunch of clean ups
Gnome Calendar
- Improved event editor dialog with rearranged time selection, moving the event calendar to a row, and more
- A banner for the event editor when creating for a read-only calendar
- Fixed event order in the side bar
Gnome maps
- Refreshed icons for layers and favourites menu buttons
- A new animation for favouriting
- Updated UI elements for spinners
- Redesigned POI edit dialog
Decibels
A new addition to the set of Gnome apps, Decibles is a new audio player that will become the default audio player for Gnome.

Gnome 48 will be part of Fedora 42 and other distros soon.
